What is your brain learning right now?

The brain is constantly busy either protecting us or trying out new things, surviving or learning. So when we pay attention to what we learn, it has a double benefit. First, we learn something new, a new skill or behavior, and second, we keep our mind and brain in a learning state where the stress and anxiety associated with survival doesn't dig deeper into the brain.

There are many things we can learn right now. If you're a musician like me, you could learn to play arpeggios on your instrument or, as a singer, switch easily from chest to head voice. Or you could learn the pronunciation of a foreign language like Hungarian. On a psychological level, it could be learning to stay calm and present in certain situations, acting with self-efficacy instead of helplessness, or reacting with self-compassion when you make a mistake instead of criticizing yourself.

Neuroplastic learning in the brain can take moments, days or years. Focusing our attention on what we are learning can be extremely helpful and valuable. Even if progress takes time and happens in small steps. I recommend that you keep a journal and remind yourself of what you are learning or want to learn.

Sincerely, George
